SECTION II: Understanding Your Hospital Report - What is a Core Measure?

Insights 2006 shows you the hospital quality measures that hospitals use in their facilities to treat most common and costly patient conditions seen by health care providers. Hospitals use quality measures for certain conditions to make sure that you get the best possible care and results during your stay with them. You will see some of the recommended care that adults should get if being treated for:

Heart Attack
Pneumonia
Heart Failure
Pregnancy

The four clinical areas above are called core measures.

Core Measures are part of a national program by the Joint Commission on Healthcare Accreditation, The Joint Commission (a national hospital reporting agency). Georgia hospitals can study these clinical areas and submit their study results. Their study results are reported to outside organizations such as The Joint Commission. The reports that are returned give the hospital information about the care they give and compare them to other hospitals from Georgia or similar hospitals across the country. This information is reported in the hospital profile part of Insights 2006 as well as on the The Joint Commission website under "Quality Check". Information like this helps hospitals track their performance over time.
