Staff Training:
Immunizing the Health Care Provider Healthcare workers immunization programs may help decrease the occurrence of nosocomial influenza, minimize lost productivity, reduce institutional outbreaks and are important for patient safety.
Successful immunization programs include the following:
Make getting the vaccine convenient
- Roving carts are more successful than “come to employee health” tactics
- Use of fact cards on the specific units helps to disperse myths and increases knowledge
- Remove cost barrier through low cost or free of charge as available
Educate the healthcare worker on the importance of getting the flu shot.
- The risk of spreading the flu among patients and co-workers
- Dispelling myths such as getting the flu from the flu shot
- CDC’s recommendations
Strong leadership from the top advocating for improved infection control and patient safety as well as a reduction in staff absenteeism and cost savings.

National Influenza Vaccination Week
Last year, CDC supported organizations across the country in their vaccination efforts during National Influenza Vaccination Week. Due to the success of the event, they will be supporting another National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) this year (November 26th - December 2nd). They have created podcasts, ecards and other e-health activities to support this effort.
